About the Ambassador Awards

The reason we have developed and embraced the use of this Ambassadors system for Central Hawke’s Bay is because we believe there are no better persons to sell the area than those living in it.

We acknowledge that we are not an international destination or indeed a national destination however; people do “find us” and “love the experiences” they have while they are here.

Therefore it is recognised that our community has a wealth of tourism promoters selling our beauty and experiences to family friends and whanau each and every day. We need to embrace and thank them for promoting our region.

Having recognised the above and with you working on our behalf we now begin the “Journey of promoting ourselves Internationally and Nationally.”

It is our vision to nominate 200 ambassadors within the next 12 months and celebrate through them the connection with building stronger tourism avenues and communities.

We cannot do this on our own and unless we had enormous budgets to work with we could never achieve this.

However with this new project and your involvement we can.

If chosen by the community to receive an ambassador award…

Be honored, very honored, and proud, for you are the very reason the region is growing.

Just to add some backbone to how we came to our vision for this partnership with our communities.

In recent decades, the rural-urban migration trend has reversed. People are moving back to small communities in increasing numbers.
A small town can strengthen its local economy as a result of business people and concerned citizens collectively identifying that community's special uniqueness and then capitalizing on it.

We challenge our Community leaders to recognise that they, too, are engaged in a marketing enterprise - that of marketing their towns to prospective "customers" who could make use of what the town, its people, and its businesses have to offer.

Competitive Edge amongst ourselves and other small towns:

This uniqueness or competitive edge is what is known in the marketing field as a differential advantage.

In the context of community development, it is the job of the community leaders like CHB Promotions Inc and the CHB District Council and businesses to persuade potential tourists, residents, and outside businesses that your district is unique--or has a differential advantage--in a way that could be important to them in their decision of where to visit or where to locate. This creation of a differential advantage could turn out to be the deciding factor for a family considering where to spend their next vacation. It could influence a family who is thinking of moving to another community, or it could steer a business to locate in your town over other towns which don't appear to have anything unique to offer.

All of the above things is what the ambassador recognition is all about…you selling how good it is here in Central Hawke's Bay by adding some real vision for the region  …add a dash of  honesty to the mix … followed by a firm “Hawke's Bay hand shake on every occasion”  will promise to seal the deal for them reconnecting with our beautiful region.

In marketing a region, the various features of the district itself become the product. The concept of the district as a product encompasses our town's scenery, natural resources, friendly atmosphere, transportation routes, history, architecture, educational facilities, shopping areas, and much more.

All of these aspects help to determine the individual character of a given town of which we have many in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Often, some of these features will be unique to that town alone but they can sometimes characterise an area of the country as well. Often, those who live and work in our community lose sight of their community's uniqueness or they take it for granted.

Too often, community-leaders assume that they already know what is unique and marketable about their region. They don't take the time to test out these assumptions with their district's customers, and when they do, it is done in a very unscientific manner.

Many of us overlook the fact that the overall uniqueness of a community is usually the result of a combination of elements rather than one or two big things.

I challenge you to make this project a massive success by buying into the support needed at every level.

There are a number of projects on the table this year that celebrate us moving forward and adding value to our people who choose to live here.

I warmly embrace your enthusiasm for the region and I am very proud to be able make 2009 an exciting year through Central Hawke's Bay Promotions Inc.

Come on …jump on board …we need you!
