The Northern Gateway to Unwind Country
Pukehou is just north of Otane on SH2. Amongst mature trees beside the highway stands Pukehou's historic Christ Church, consecrated in 1859, the oldest church in the Waiapu diocese. An oak tree from the grounds of Christ Church was felled and donated to provide timber for the doors of the Napier Cathedral when it was rebuilt following the Napier earthquake. The church has been extensively restored and is used for special services and cultural events.
Off-road parking beside the Pukehou Store gives travellers a chance to stop and purchase refreshments.
Pukehou has a strong community spirit and a new community hall in the grounds of Pukehou School.
Just down the road is Te Aute College. The college has had amongst its students Sir Apirana Ngata, the first Maori to graduate from a New Zealand university, who went on to become an influential figure in New Zealand government and Sir Maui Pomare, who became an MP and a cabinet minister. The college has also produced very good sportsmen.
Opposite Te Aute College is the Paper Mulberry Café and Gallery which incorporates a small gallery of local art and craft.
